UNDP supported Government of Bangladesh to advance the formulation of the National Adaptation Plan by facilitating the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of Bangladesh with financial support from Green Climate Fund (GCF) (UNDP, 2019). The objective of the project is to formulate the Bangladesh National Adaptation Plan (NAP), ensure the climate change adaptation (CCA) is mainstreamed into the national planning process, building capacity, including the formulation of institutional mechanism and financing. Consortium: Led by Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS), the other consortium members were Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER), BRAC University, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS), International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD).

Fulfilling the objective has two parts as indicated above but needs some reiteration for properly understanding the challenges. The first part is the formulation of the NAP and the second is its integration into the national development process and plan.

The Scope of the study that divided into 4 following elements

  • Vulnerability, capacity and Knowledge Gap Analysis,
  • Prioritization of Adaptation Strategies Aligning with National Priorities
  • Integration of CCA into National Development Planning and Programming Process
  • Compiling and Communicating NAP

Stakeholder engagement: Keen involvement of stakeholders throughout the NAP process ensured the processing of available scientific, technical & factual knowledge and integration with climate risks and vulnerabilities, thus ensuring effective assessment of adaptation necessities.

Workshop, Seminars and Consultation Meetings: Stakeholder engagement from the very beginning through workshops and consultations will help set criteria for assessment, identification, and prioritization of adaptation options and support the elaboration of the NAP domestic financing strategy.
